Van Morrison to play Hampton Court Festival.

Van Morrison is the latest star to join the line-up for this year's Hampton Court Palace Festival.

The idiosyncratic Northern Irish singer-songwriter famous for hits such as Moondance and Brown Eyed Girl will play the 18th annual festival at the former royal palace on 10 June.

The 64-year-old performer joins a programme already including Simply Red, Katherine Jenkins, the violinist Nicola Benedetti and Michael Ball.

And it follows the addition of the pop flamenco stars Gipsy Kings. A spokesman for the band, who are French but descended from Spanish Romany, said they expected the event to be magical.

He said: "This will bring us right back to our origins, performing under the stars and in an environment that welcomed travelling musicians who entertained courtiers back in the 16th century. This will be a welcome French invasion of the palace.”

The festival runs from 8 to 19 June.
